Project Overview:
I independently developed GhostStep, a 2.5D puzzle-platformer, as a solo developer using Unreal Engine 5 for my second-year university Module 2 project. The game focuses on unique player abilities, including creating a temporary ghost clone and manipulating player size to solve environmental puzzles and overcome dangerous obstacles. This five-week project significantly expanded my skills in gameplay programming, puzzle design, player interaction, and level design within a 2.5D environment, while also improving my problem-solving and technical game design abilities throughout development.

Development:
– Independently developed GhostStep as a solo project using Unreal Engine 5 for a second-year university Module 2 assignment. – Created a gameplay ability that allows the player to generate a temporary ghost clone for 5 seconds to activate switches, solve puzzles, and bypass obstacles. – Developed mechanics allowing the player to grow larger or shrink smaller to interact with the environment and access different pathways. – Designed environmental puzzles that combine ghost cloning, size shifting, and timing-based interactions to challenge the player creatively. – Implemented dangerous environmental hazards such as spikes, lava and traversal challenges to create engaging gameplay scenarios. – Created levels within a 2.5D perspective, focusing on player navigation, puzzle flow, and environmental readability. – Worked with animation blueprints to improve character movement, gameplay feedback, and interaction responsiveness. – Developed and implemented flipbook animations to support visual gameplay elements and environmental interactions. – Added and integrated sound effects to improve immersion, gameplay feedback, and overall player experience. – Scripted gameplay systems and player interactions using Unreal Engine 5 Blueprints. – Overcame technical and design challenges related to 2.5D gameplay, perspective handling, and mechanic implementation. – Balanced creative ambition with realistic project scope and deadlines while still experimenting with unique gameplay mechanics. – Managed all areas of development independently, including gameplay systems, level design, mechanics, iteration, and polish.

The Result:
The overall result of creating GhostStep was a highly rewarding and enjoyable experience, despite the challenges that came with developing a 2.5D puzzle-platformer as a solo project. Since I had very little experience with 2.5D games beforehand, learning how to work with the perspective, gameplay flow, and player interaction within a 2.5D environment was a completely new experience for me. Throughout development, I significantly improved my technical and creative skills by working with systems such as flipbooks, sound effects, tile maps, animation blueprints, and gameplay mechanics within Unreal Engine 5. The project also encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone and experiment with more unique gameplay ideas rather than staying entirely within a safe scope. Although I originally considered creating a tower defence game, I decided to focus on a more manageable idea that still allowed me to challenge myself creatively and technically. Developing mechanics such as the ghost clone ability and size-shifting system helped create an engaging puzzle experience while also teaching me the importance of balancing ambition with realistic project scope and development time. Overall, GhostStep was an exciting learning experience that helped expand my understanding of both 2D and 2.5D game development, while further improving my gameplay programming, technical design, and problem-solving skills as a game developer
