Project Overview:

Gilded Shores was the final module of my second year at University of Staffordshire, developed over five weeks in Unreal Engine 5 by a team of 10+ students. The project simulated a professional studio environment, with team members based in London and Stoke, which required strong communication and collaboration skills. As a Junior Technical Designer, I contributed to gameplay systems including digging, picking and dropping and pedestal puzzle, while actively participating in weekly meetings to track progress, report updates, and receive new task assignments from the tech lead.

My Contributions:

– Developed the core treasure digging system inspired by Sea of Thieves, where players must repeatedly dig in the same location multiple times before fully revealing treasure. – Implemented progressive treasure uncovering mechanics to create a more immersive and satisfying digging experience for players. – Integrated imported assets and environmental feedback to improve the visual appeal and overall feel of the digging mechanic. – Identified and resolved gameplay issues discovered during playtesting, particularly related to scene component setup and treasure interaction behaviour. – Created an item pickup and dropping system inspired by Sea of Thieves, where dropped items instantly reposition to the floor for smoother gameplay interaction. – Evaluated different implementation approaches, including physics-based interactions, before deciding on a more stable and efficient solution with the team. – Developed a pedestal system where players must place the correct artefacts into pedestals to unlock doors and progress further into the level. – Communicated with team members through meetings and discussions to coordinate unfinished mechanics and ensure systems could be completed collaboratively. – Developed the shovel interaction and digging system, including hit detection and interaction tracing for terrain detection. – Implemented ray tracing logic connected to player animations and interaction systems to detect valid digging areas. – Worked closely with the team to refine gameplay feel, including adjusting shovel swing timing and interaction placement based on feedback. – Recognised the importance of communication in collaborative development and used the experience to improve teamwork, coordination, and technical discussion skills across the project.

The Result

Working on this project was a valuable and enjoyable experience that helped me strengthen both my technical design and teamwork skills within a collaborative development environment. Developing mechanics such as digging, item interaction, puzzle systems, and the shovel mechanic allowed me to improve my gameplay programming, problem-solving, and iterative design abilities. The project was also a major learning experience, particularly in communication and collaboration, as I learned how important clear communication is when working across multiple teams and campuses to ensure systems integrate smoothly and efficiently.
